What you need to know about CBD oil for dogs
We LOVE dogs!! We are dog people. And we love CBD!! There are so many benefits to taking CBD. There is a lot of information floating around online right now about CBD for dogs. And it can be confusing. Is it helpful? What is it good for? Are there side effects? So we want to share some information that we have learned and help you make the best decision you can for your dog.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. It comes from two sources. Hemp derived CBD comes from industrial hemp plants and medical marijuana CBD comes from medical marijuana plants. Industrial hemp plants are high in CBD and cannot contain more than .3% THC. Medical marijuana products usually have a higher THC to CBD ratio and are only available in states where medical marijuana is legal.
CBD is one of more than 100 phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is considered to be safe and non-addicting. CBD is closely related to another phytocannabinoid found in the cannabis plant – THC (delta -9 tetrahydrocannabinol). The “high” that is commonly associated with cannabis comes from THC. Both THC and CBD have significant therapeutic properties. But, unlike THC, CBD does not cause intoxicating effects.
How does CBD oil affect dogs
We know that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors in the nervous system of a dog. This helps maintain balance in the body and keeps it in a normal healthy state. CBD is also thought to provide pain relief in dogs with chronic pain. It also has a calming effect and can help with anxiety in dogs. CBD also helps control seizures in dogs. Please read my article about my dog Darby and how it helped her with seizures.
Possible Side Effects
There are no known side effects from giving CBD to your dog. They may seem more drowsy or seem thirsty. These mild side effects should pass after a few days. But, you can also lower the dose of CBD that you are giving to your dog to see if that helps.
As the CBD health trend continues to grow, you will see more and more products on the market and geared specifically for pets. The bottom line is, CBD does help improve the quality of life in many pets just like it does humans. If you are interested in learning more about CBD for yourself or your pets, please message us.
